BAPTISM AT PORT CITY

Baptism is one of our favorite things we get to be a part of at Port City.  At its most foundational level, we believe that baptism is a public declaration of your faith in Jesus and your decision to follow Jesus! It is a representation and a celebration of the work that God has already done within us by grace through faith in Jesus to save, cleanse, and forgive us of our sin: an outward expression of an inward reality.  Baptism is also an opportunity for you to mark your commitment to walking with God and our commitment as a church to come alongside and help you in your walk.

So, if you have put your faith & trust in Jesus, then baptism may very well be your next step in going public with your faith in front of family, friends, and your church family!

Questions?

Do I have to be baptized to be saved?
Romans 10:9 tells us that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Salvation is connected to living life under Jesus’ authority. Baptism isn’t a requirement for salvation, but it does fulfill an instruction given by Jesus.

What if I have been a Christian for a long time but have never been baptized? Should I still be baptized?
It’s true that baptism normally marks the beginning of a faith journey with Christ. But even if you’ve been on this journey for a while, you should be baptized.

I was baptized as a young child or before I really knew what faith in Jesus means. Should I be baptized again?
We practice believer’s baptism. We encourage you to be baptized after you’ve made faith in Jesus your own. People baptized as infants or young children should be baptized again.

I was baptized before. I understood what baptism was about and my trust in Christ was genuine. But I since wandered from the Way of Jesus. Now I am back on track. Should I be baptized again?
Our journey with Jesus doesn’t move in a straight line. We live lives of struggle against the world and our old nature. When we stray, Jesus is always inviting us to turn around and follow him. God’s mercies are new every morning. You do not need to be baptized again.

Can I be baptized in a private ceremony?
Since the beginning, baptism has been a public profession of faith. There can be situations when a ‘private baptism’ is necessary for health, age, or other reasons. But normally baptism will be a public ceremony.
