Embrace The Stranger

"I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right." Acts 10:34-35

Insight

As Acts 10 opens up, we find Peter, a devout Jew, wrestling with his preconceived notions and prejudices as he encounters Cornelius, a Roman centurion. Their meeting unfolds a narrative of profound significance, revealing God's inclusive love and the transformative power of embracing divine surprises.

God's ways often challenge our expectations. Peter, like many of us, had constructed barriers in his mind—barriers of tradition, culture, and prejudice. Yet, God shattered those barriers, revealing a truth Peter could never have fathomed on his own: God doesn’t show favoritism and all are welcome in His Kingdom.

How often do we, like Peter, limit God's work to fit within the confines of our understanding? How frequently do we overlook the beauty of diversity in God's creation, clinging instead to our narrow perspectives?

Acts 10 challenges us to break free from these limitations and embrace the vastness of God's love—a love that transcends boundaries and welcomes all into its embrace. Moreover, it teaches us the power of obedience in the face of uncertainty.

Despite his initial hesitation, Peter obediently follows the Spirit's leading, journeying to Cornelius' home and witnessing the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon Gentiles. This pivotal moment not only shattered Peter's preconceptions but also paved the way for the expansion of the early Church to the Gentiles.

In our own lives, God often calls us to step out in faith, even when the path ahead seems unclear. Like Peter, we may encounter moments of doubt and hesitation, but when we surrender to God's leading, we open ourselves to unimaginable blessings and opportunities for growth.

Contrary to a culture marked by division and distrust, we're called to embody the spirit of hospitality. We should open the doors of our hearts and homes to those who may appear different from us, recognizing the inherent dignity and worth of every individual created in God's image.

Like Peter, we must be willing to step out in faith, even when the path ahead seems uncertain. And like Cornelius, we eagerly extend hospitality and embrace the stranger as a friend. In doing so, may we continually experience the transformative power of God's boundless love, uniting us as one diverse and beautiful family in Christ.

Reflection

  • In what ways do your preconceived notions and prejudices hinder your ability to see and experience God's inclusive love?

  • How can you actively practice hospitality and embrace those who are different from you in your daily life?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, open my eyes to see the beauty of your inclusive love that knows no boundaries or limitations. Help me to break free from the confines of my prejudices and embrace the diversity of your creation with an open heart and mind. Grant me the courage to step out in faith, trusting in your guidance even when the path ahead seems unclear. May I embody the spirit of hospitality and extend love to all whom we encounter. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
