What Is This Forming in You?

READ

This is the day the reflection deepens. Over the past three days, you've been looking honestly at your attention, your affection, and your activity. Today, we step back from the individual threads and ask about the pattern they weave together: what is all of this forming in you?

Jesus closes the Sermon on the Mount with a famous image:

Matthew 7:24–27

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

The question Jesus is asking isn't only "what do you believe?" It's "what are you building on?" And the only way to know what you're building on is to wait for the storm—or, better yet, to look at your foundation before the storm comes.

REFLECT

Here is the honest truth about devotion: it always forms us. The question isn't whether we are being shaped. We are always being shaped—by what we give our attention, our affection, and our energy to. The question is how, and into what.

Every object of devotion has a trajectory. It is leading you somewhere. A life organized around career advancement will form a certain kind of person. A life organized around the approval of others will form another. A life organized around comfort and self-protection will form another still. And a life genuinely oriented around love for God and love for people will form yet another.

Paul captures this beautifully in his letter to the Galatians, where he describes the fruit that grows when the Spirit is at work: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Galatians 5:22–23). These aren't things we manufacture—they're things we grow into when we're rooted in the right soil. They are the natural result of devotion rightly placed.

So look back at what you named earlier this week. Is this devotion making you more loving? More patient? More generous? More at peace? Is it drawing you toward God and toward others—or is it pulling you inward, into self-protection, comparison, or fear?

One of the most searching questions in the Devotion Audit is this: Is what you are currently devoted to capable of bearing the weight you've placed on it? Careers, success, relationships, reputation, comfort—even good things—can buckle under the pressure of ultimate devotion. They were never designed to carry the full weight of a human life. Only God is strong enough for that.

Take your time with this today. This is holy territory. What you name here—about what your devotion is forming in you—is the beginning of reorientation.

RESPOND

  • Based on what you've named this week—your attention, affection, and activity—complete this sentence as honestly as you can: "In this season, I am currently devoted to..."

  • Is this devotion making you more loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, and kind—or less? Is it drawing you toward God and others, or pulling you toward isolation, self-protection, or fear?

  • Is what you are currently devoted to capable of bearing the weight you've placed on it? What comes up for you when you sit with that question?

REST

God, I want to be built on solid ground. Show me the places where I've been building on sand—where I've placed my hope in things that cannot hold. I don't want to wait for the storm to find out what my foundation is. Give me the courage to look now and the grace to rebuild around what is true and lasting. Form me into someone who loves well, lives faithfully, and reflects You in the world. Amen.
